Paultney Street commemorates the village in the Forest of Dean that was Dick Whittington’s boyhood home.  He was reputed to have heard the sound of Bow Bells while ascending Highgate Hill...

The poet, Andrew Marvell (1621-78) was a local resident.  Born in the East Riding of Yorkshire, he studied at Cambridge and later tutored the daughter of General Fairfax.  

In 1654, he began his career as unofficial laureate to Cromwell.  He was MP for Hull from 1659 until his death.  He travelled abroad on political business and was possibly involved in espionage.

Although highly regarded in his day as a satirist, patriot and foe of tyranny, attacking corruption at court and in Parliament, Marvell didn’t become rated as a lyric poet until after the Great War.

He treats conventional subjects with an ironic and enigmatic approach, as in his best known poem: ‘To his Coy Mistress’.   Among its memorable lines:

 My vegetable love would grow

Vaster than empires, and as slow.
